Frank Vanhaecke received a PhD from Ghent University (UGent, Belgium, 1992). He carried out postdoctoral research at UGent and the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany. Currently, he is Senior Full Professor in Analytical Chemistry at UGent, where he leads the ‘Atomic & Mass Spectrometry – A&MS’ research group that is specialized in the determination, speciation and isotopic analysis of (trace) elements via ICP-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). His group studies fundamentally-oriented aspects of the technique and develops methods for solving challenging scientific problems in an interdisciplinary context. Specific topics of research include spatially resolved analysis of solid materials via laser ablation (LA) – ICP-MS, the development of HPLC-ICP-MS methods for quantitative metabolite profiling of pharmaceutical drugs and high-precision isotopic analysis using multi-collector ICP-MS. Frank received a ‘European Plasma Spectrochemistry Award’ (2011), a ‘Fellowship of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy – SAS’ (2013) and the Lester Strock Award (2017). Frank is (co-)author of ≈ 375 papers published in peer-reviewed international journals. So far, he has been promoter of 42 PhD studies.
